CLRN Researchers Recognized

Two Connected Learning Research Network (CLRN) scholars — Kris D. Gutiérrez and Sonia Livingstone — have been recognized for their outstanding contributions to their fields of study.
Gutiérrez, a professor of literacy and learning sciences at the University of Colorado, received two honors from the American Educational Research Association’s Division G: the Distinguished Contributions to Social Contexts in Education Research — Lifetime Achievement Award and the Henry T. Trueba Award for Research Leading to the Transformation of the Social Contexts of Education.
Livingstone, professor of social psychology and head of the Department of Media and Communications at the London School of Economics and Political Science, received from Prince William the 2014 Officer of the Order of the British Empire award “for services to children and child Internet safety.”
Both scholars are working with their CLRN colleagues, leading research studies that advance connected learning, a 21st century educational approach that takes advantage of today’s abundance of digital information and social connection and makes learning relevant.
CLRN’s research, supported by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, is geared toward understanding the opportunities and risks for learning afforded by today’s changing media ecology, as well as building new learning environments that support effective learning and educational equity. Its work focuses on a model of learning — connected learning — that is socially connected, interest-driven and oriented toward educational opportunity for all. The network is headquartered at UC Irvine and is part of MacArthur Foundation’s Digital Media and Learning Initiative.
